Message 1004 - Posted: 3 Jun 2009, 9:14:24 UTC

I have a growing queue of completed exponents. They haven't been uploaded and the message is: "project file upload handler is missing".

First apparent about 2100 GMT 2nd June 2009. Any suggestions?

That does not happen with all of the Enigma WUs. Some Enigma WUs can be uploaded, others not. But there are always the same that can not be uploaded since a few days. I have the problem on three computers.

Am I the only one with the problem? Has anyone an idea what I can do?

Thanks, Grubix.

Could you enable additional log entries in cc_config ?

The start and completion of file transfers.

Show completion status of file transfers.

Debugging information about HTTP operations.

Debugging information about network communication.

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration

I'm not sure which one will display info about uploads, but it should be safe to enable all at once.

From the log, I see that you're using http proxy. Could you check, if you can access the upload handler directly in the web browser (I'm assuming that your browser uses the same proxy) ? It's here: http://www.enigmaathome.net/file_upload_handler
It should display something like this:

1
no command

The log looks quite interesting, nothing seems to be wrong there, after some header exchange the BOINC Core suddenly says that the file upload handler is missing. IMO it would be good to strip the IP/hostnames from the log file and post it to the public, then we'll be able to ask BOINC devs what they think about it.

Yes, that's right. For these computers it is the only way into the Internet. I will run the test and write what I get. I can do this not before Tuesday, sorry. The computers are not home...

Bye, Grubix.

I am having this same issue as the others in this post with some of the work units, but not all. I have quite a few now that give project file upload handler is missing. I just upgraded to the latest boinc client to see if that would help and no change.

... Could you check, if you can access the upload handler directly in the web browser (I'm assuming that your browser uses the same proxy) ?

The browser uses the same proxy. When I enter the address, I get the message that you mention.

<data_server_reply>
    <status>1</status>
    <message>no command</message>
</data_server_reply>

I try to describe how the upload looks. But in English it is not easy for me:

A working upload:
-----------------
1. The WU is e.g. at 0 / 116 bytes.
2. The transmission starts, it sends a request to Enigma.
3. I get a response from the server.
4. Data is sent to the server.
5. The display switches to 116/116 byte.
6. I get a response from the server.
7. The WU is uploaded and disappears from the display.

A not working upload:
---------------------
1. The WU is e.g. at 0 / 116 bytes.
2. The transmission starts, it sends a request to Enigma.
3. I get a response from the server.
4. The display switches to 114/116 byte or 323/116 byte (see screenshot)
6. I get the "Project file upload handler is missing" message.

There are currently about 10% of the WUs are concerned, the other 90% will be uploaded without difficulty.

... post it to the public ...

A working upload:

Do you use a proxy server ? Could you enable the debug flags listed above, and post the log (after stripping your IP's) ?

The browser uses the same proxy. When I enter the address, I get the message that you mention.

Could you check what's the external IP address of the proxy server ? I've tried grepping the httpd.log looking for the IP from the BOINC log you've sent me via PM, but it's not there. So I guess the proxy must have different internal and external IP's.
I tried searching the user-agent string (BOINC 6.4.7 windows) but that gave me way too much data.

The last few days, i have seen no new WUs which could not be uploaded. I will however continue to monitor.

The number of the old WUs are going now smaller. The BOINC-Client is "tired" and gives up. ;-)

Perhaps the proxy is misconfigured (or configured like that for purpose) and caches server's error replies. But I'm not sure if it's even possible to cache a post request, that would be probably violation of http standards.
I've grepped all the http logs looking for the IP you've send me, there are no sign of errors - no 404's in the access_log and no entries in the error log, everything just seems to be fine.

OK, many thanks for your help. If the problem comes from the proxy, then you should pardon the work I've done to you.

I have no access to the proxy. Since it is the only way to the internet for me, I can not change anything.

If you want, you can look one last time in the log. The IP is right, I have just checked again. At 22:30 UTC I have tried twice the upload from 7 WUs. Unsuccessful.

Thanks again for your help. I'm going to reset the project on all the computers. Maybe it helps. :-)

Have a nice weekend, Grubix.

You DO have permission to be running BOINC on these computers, don't you?

Just a side comment I pulled out from way back in my brain.
