....due to my current employment predicament (i.e. none), I'm going to have to stop working on WU's until I start getting some decent income again (that pesky electric bill just won't go down while BOINC is running.) I'll still lurk here to see what's been going on. If you see my RAC go back up again, you'll know I got a job. :-) L8r.

Thanks. I've got a video interview Tuesday, and another interested party is supposed to be getting back to me on Monday. Still, we're in the early stages of the interview process. It will get better, I just gotta keep the bills down for now.

You could always turn your computer off when you're not using it :P

I'm in the same bucket, found out on Monday that I won't have a job next year (I work at a school).

Yeah, I know, but I'm also flipping between Windows (for Solidworks and Skype, because my webcam has no linux driver) and Linux. Maybe when I'm done with this class I'll do it in may "spare" time, just like the project intended.....;-)

What do you teach? What state?

Well, the job I'm losing is IT/AV support (day job/part time). I'm also a stagehand/designer, and teach some stagecraft here and there at other schools. I work/live in the Portland, OR area which also includes some work in Vancouver.

Well, I'm meeting with a potential employer tomorrow to discuss an offer they want to make to me. I met them last week and they seemed impressed. They called earlier today about going into sales engineering position to which I gave them a firm "No", but we'll see what happens tomorrow. Wish me luck! ;-)

Got me an offer today! (Woo-Hoo!) I need to double-check the numbers, but it looks good!

It may be time to crank up the processor again! ;-)

What you could do, and this is only a guess, I have BOINC fixed at 20% of my resources, currently split into 25% SETI/Astropulse and 75% Enigma, suspending BOINC when I use a program such as a "serious" game. I turn off the computer when I leave the house and occasional nights (computer's in my room and the fan noise helps put me to sleep :) I'm hoping that since 20% CPU is about normal computer usage anyway, I won't suffer any computer damage from BOINC.

As for electricity costs, I live with my parents, who have job positions and loans unlikely to be affected by the recession of the past two years. I've given estimated costs to them (~$30/mo for unrealistic 24/7 100% 350W use last time I checked), but they have repeatedly told me they don't care, since they leave computers on all the time, and say it's minimal when compared to heating, fans, and A/C.

A lot depends on where you live. From my point of view, $30/month for 350W/24/7 looks cheap, here in Poland electricity is expensive. For the BOINC server alone I have to pay $50~60/month.

You're not helping the stereotype about "computer geeks" living with their parents, dontcha know.....;-)

PS Good job on making your parents pay for our benefit. They got any extra rooms? :-))))0

Extra rooms for a large BOINC cluster, of course.
