AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+, but running 32-bit Windows. What app should I run? Is the Athlon64 a 64-bit binary?

The only 64bit app is Windows_x64 which you can find somewhere above, I think it's also the fastest one for 64 bit processors running Windows.
The default Athlon64 binary is 32bit (build with devcpp).

Also, please use zip instead of rar.

Ok, I've changed the links.

When you start BOINC again, it should resume previous tasks with new app.

The executable file was older than the executable file I already had. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Windows 64bit:

Is the 64 bit app faster than the 32bit optimized app? If so, by how much?

Hey Everybody,

I currently use a C2D box running under WinXP for my personal machine and like the idea of running the optimized client but am wondering if M4 Project owner Stefan Krah (and others, if any) are cool with the recompiled client and its' results? I remember back in the early days of pre-BOINC SETI@home that an unoffical optimzied client was available from a gentleman in Germany (namens 'Ollie' denke Ich...) but that the people in Berkeley were not pleased. PLEASE ADVISE IF OK.

BTW .. I'm new to the Enigma challenge, having put in over a 1^5 CPU hours into the SETI classic task plus loads of other time into Climate, Einstein, Folding, etc. both through BOINC and as stand-alone projects. All were interesting to varying degrees but lost their novelty to me over time so, as I was kicking about looking for new DC job with a little romance and mystery, I was pleased to discover M4/Enigma. Loved the film U-571 and Germany used to be home, so the project is a nice fit for me and welcome respite from the tedium of an everyday DC task.

Thanks for your help.

It goes right underneath the line near the beginning of the file that says:

5.17 is added by BOINC, I've just set user-friendly app name to Enigma 0.76-Opt.
What's the speed increase when running optimized app on p4 ? On my Celeron D 2.13@3.65 it was up to 30% faster last time I checked.

Regarding my previous question, I see the application is called Enigma 0.76-Opt 5.17, so does this mean I did indeed copy the correct executable file and should not worry that the file was older than the executable that was already present in the folder? (Don't worry, I did check what processor I am working with.)

Also, it looks like I have about a 27% increase in speed.

I'm assuming the answer is yes, since the driver of said project (TJM) carries the following titles:

Sorry, I meant to say the time to complete has been reduced by about 27%.
So, the speed is about 137% what it was.

Whoops! just noticed my typo. CPU hours should read 10^5 not 1^5 as shown. ;-)

On two AMD64 systems I've tested it was a bit faster (few percents), but someone else said that it's slower than the old 32bit executable. I guess that the speed increase/decrease depends on the system hardware.

The timestamp on file doesn't mean anything, if you see -Opt in app name and a significant speed increase, then you're running optimized app.

Now that the project is alive again I wanted to test the optimized apps.
The 32-bit app for Core 2 works nicely, but since I'm using Windows XP x64 I thought I could give the win x64 app a try.
Strangely that one doesn't work at all on my lappy - all WU errored out immediately when using the 64-bit app. :-(

Using BOINC client 5.10.45 btw. ;-)

I have no idea why it doesn't work, stderr_out doesn't show anything usefull, just a strange app error which I've never seen before. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about that anyway, because 64 bit app's performance gain is close to none on most systems.

Hello TJM,

I have updated optimized apps on all my machines (only one left) and have not yet received one new work unit.

what's their proportion in the feeder ?

Why is the new optimized app (enigma_0.76_windows_intelx86.exe) dated August 2007 when the ordinary app (downloaded when you attach to the project) is dated September 2007? Shouldn't the optimized app have a later date?

I mean the optimized app for Core2.

Why was the enigma_0.76_windows_intelx86.exe redownloaded? I've used Athlon64 optimisied binaries.
