Message 2278 - Posted: 31 May 2012, 22:43:01 UTC

As probably everyone noticed, there is no work available for a long period of time.
Unfortunately it's not going to change soon, because I have to find a replacement server.
The old machine is not reliable anymore, it passes stress tests yet freezes randomly after couple of days (or even weeks sometimes) during normal operation, which is not acceptable.
The worst part however are the HDDs, only two still alive, one is damaged already while the other starts to suffer from old age (was online for over 3,5 years).

In current state the server barely keeps the website up, so any work has to wait until I'll get the new hardware setup, which is going to take a while.

I'm sure we will all be here once you have a new server up and running. Would there be anything the community could do to help?

In particular, would donations of cash help?

Have the same question, as well as will to support.

What kind / type of server do you need? (CPU / RAM / DISK)?

All you have to do is to tell us what material items and then how much more cash is needed and we well all try to help as we are able!

I've been fascinated with this project for quite some time now and participated for a while when I had the spare computing resources. It really makes me sad to see that this has fallen by the wayside. This project has some really interesting historical significance and should be of interest to any student of cryptology and history. I sincerely hope that this is resurrected and I would also be willing to donate to the project.

Yes, it's a shame to have been down for such a long time. The historical importance of these messages was/is the main factor for my involvement. I'd like to help get things going again if there's anything I can do.

I've been watching every couple of days, and today found some new points allocated to me.
Waiting for new tasks, but most of all

The current short batches were released to test the new validator, I changed a lot of things and now I have to fix the new bugs, some of them were introduced by switching to new BOINC API and they're harder to track.

Long batches won't come back until I'll upgrade/fix the server.
The next revision of the server software is designed for less manual work, however the number of workunits in progress will be limited because long periods of very high load are killing the hard drives quickly.

Thanks for all the dedicated servers offers, unfortunately due to the way the backend software was designed, it wouldn't be possible to move it outside of my network, at least not without major redesign.

I'm really pleased to know that you have got the time to start things moving again.
There are a number of us who would like to contribute so you can update equipment.
I am happy to use paypal if you provide a suitable email address for the purpose.

Happy to read that the project is going on. If all active participants would contribute (best would be to use paypal) an equivalent of let's say one (or more) beer(s), it will not harm anyone and still provide enough to keep your equipment updated and running...

BTW, according to my experience the hard drives do not die by the high load itself, but rather by the HIGH TEMPERATURE that is GENERATED by the high load... the cooler they are, the longer they live....

That's true, but average desktop drive won't live very long under constant load no matter what the temperature is.

In my experience the average power supply of a computer -especially those of the so-called 'A-brand' big names (Compaq, HP, Dell, IBM)- will sooner die on you than their hard disks.
