Message 2504 - Posted: 6 Apr 2013, 19:45:41 UTC

The company which is hosting part of my server (download mirror, domain and a few other things) announced that my VPS will be moved to another location (datacenter) on 18th of April.
The IP address is going to be changed so I think the server will be unavailable for at least couple of hours, maybe up to a day.

Will we have to detach and re-attach after the change due to the IP address changing?

Nope, I think most BOINC versions won't even notice the change (except downtime, of course). Older BOINC clients may require a restart and/or DNS cache flushing.

2-3 days before the move I'll change the DNS TTL to a low value for even smother update.

Just a shutdown and restart of the client will do. Had to do this on my BOINC 5.10.45 machines when POEM had problems recently.

Cheers,

Al.

The downtime is going to start at some point during the next 24 hours. I hope I'll be able to get everything running back as soon as possible.

I think the move got delayed for a reason unknown to me and eventually the old server went down today at around 10am my time. I've just finished configuration changes and so far it looks like everything is running fine, already from the new location.

As expected I'm having to shut down and restart BOINC clients to upload and report results, but that's what I expected and it works :)

Cheers,

Al.

I wish that DNS timeouts were honored. It took days for my machines to be able to connect again as some DNS was reporting the old IP addresses for quite a while.

There was also another problem, I made a mistake when adding records to the DNS and it caused the website to be unavailable for some of the participants.
I didn't notice it for at least 10-12 hours - also because of caching.

I'll be testing compressed VPN between servers during next few days, there's possibility to save lots of bandwidth which would be nice, at this moment I'm very close to my limit.

Why don't you run the auto-lock script then?

To do this, use the script html/ops/autolock.php; usage:
autolock.php [ --ndays N ]

locks threads not changed in N days (default 90).

You can run this as a periodic task from config.xml.
