Core client version

I'm using an acient core client (5.3.31) atm because over on Einstein at Home, the newer clients in combination with the science app kept producing crashes on this box. Now I can't get any more Enigma work. Do you have the restriction only to keep out certain "optimized clients" (in which case it should be safe to simply fake the version string somehow) or do you need certain features of the newer clients, so that using an older client would mess up the work?
