41) Message boards : Number crunching : New Optimized apps for 64-bit Linux (Message 3865)

Post:
Hi,

I use 64-bit Slackware on one of my computers, which "out of the box" isn't backwards compatible with 32-bit binaries (or binaries supporting both). I have no interest in making it compatible, but would love to get Enigma@home on it.

Does anyone know where I can get the source code to compile this 64-bit version (the binary must not link to any 32-bit library)? Also, to install it, is it just a matter of ignoring BOINC's "not for your system" error, quit, and just drop the binary in the Projects subdirectory?

Thank you!

Hello everybody. As I`m new in this project (joined the project 24 hours ago) I would like to know if someone can tell me what is the current status of the project..where I can read more about it. Where are all the messages listed so I can read them.
I can see my PC is currently working on a task..Don`t really know what that is..or to what/who it belongs. Anyhow, this project attracts me..and i`ll be serving it as long as it will be running. I like the idea of having the mystery solved on these broken messages.

Cheers,
EC

This site has all the information:

The three "original" messages: http://www.enigma.hoerenberg.com/index.php?cat=M4%20Project%202006

Messages were discovered, and solved, later on during the project.
We are working on the last of those:

What will happen after the 3 original messages are cracked? Are there more, or is that it?

The three original messages from 2006 were cracked a long time ago. The first two were cracked relatively quickly while the third one wasn't cracked until 2013. A bunch more unsolved messages were later discovered, and we are right now on the last of that batch.

Hi folks;
Sorry , new here. How many messages are left to break?

The message we are currently working on is the last message I think. There were originally only 3 messages but more were discovered, including this last one. Enigma@home admins say that the message will be cracked between now and late 2017.

Workunits left: 149 315 484
Workunits done last hour: 6766

Where are you getting the "workunits done last hour"? Is it "workunits validated last hour"? In less than 2 months, that number is now only 951.

When I came back to BOINC last year, I decided that when there was a CUDA client for a project, I would only do CUDA (not OpenCL) work for that project, since GPUs are easy to replace if/when something bad happens.

The only two CPU-based projects I do are Enigma and Yoyo OGR and that's because they are long-time favorites of mine. It would be great if I could take at least one of them off the CPU.

I agree with Jaro in that we should get a GPU client for Enigma. CPU-based distributed computing is dying out because of both mobile devices and the increasing power and influence of GPUs on desktop machines. We can't rely on 2017 as an end to this project, we should develop a GPU client or it will be much longer.

I also have hardware issues, until I'll find super cheap and low power CUDA-capable card (I'm looking for something like 8400/8500/8600 with broken signal output - people sell them cheap because they're useless, but I haven't seen one in a while)

I have one of those cards (GeForce 8600 GT). Very cheap and works great, and I've been running SETI's CUDA on it for about a month. It holds down the temperature well. What do you mean "broken signal output" and "useless"?

Are you referring to RFI? (If so, thanks for telling me :)

People suggested here that if the transmission was garbled enough, the language of the message would be incomplete and ruin the scoring system.

Why not move on to the other messages we discussed, while leaving the finished workunits available on the site for human combing (a la LibriVox)? Anyone with a (language)<->German dictionary can do this, and good candidates could be forwarded to Stefan for investigation. All while the computer goes through the other messages.

I understand this is not likely to be finished in the short term, but that's the case for many distributed computing projects (SETI, RC5, OGR-27). But it's at least worth a shot!

So you're saying it's like this?

bytereef.org -> E@H servers <- BOINC clients?

But are bytereef.org workunits downloaded by E@H servers occasionally in bulk or are E@H servers a real-time link to bytereef.org?

Is E@H "separate" where bytereef.org workunits are occasionally pulled in bulk by E@H's servers, or does the BOINC client directly pull from bytereef.org?

Just curious.

Thanks,

If you know me in person, you know how detailed and storylike my dreams are, often with full plots that could be made into action movies. Also, my dreams are in full color, which should only be the case with women.

I had a dream last night that after all the workunits had been exhausted, I read a message on www.bytereef.org/m4_project.html saying that 57 German-language messages had been found, with no way of knowing which was the intended/correct third message.

What you could do, and this is only a guess, I have BOINC fixed at 20% of my resources, currently split into 25% SETI/Astropulse and 75% Enigma, suspending BOINC when I use a program such as a "serious" game. I turn off the computer when I leave the house and occasional nights (computer's in my room and the fan noise helps put me to sleep :) I'm hoping that since 20% CPU is about normal computer usage anyway, I won't suffer any computer damage from BOINC.

As for electricity costs, I live with my parents, who have job positions and loans unlikely to be affected by the recession of the past two years. I've given estimated costs to them (~$30/mo for unrealistic 24/7 100% 350W use last time I checked), but they have repeatedly told me they don't care, since they leave computers on all the time, and say it's minimal when compared to heating, fans, and A/C.
